Ten Little Known Ways to Build Trust Through Networking

January 14, 2012 in Marketing

By Vicki Garcia

With the advent of the internet, websites, social media and other technologies, it can seem that the “old-fashioned” effectiveness of local business networking has been left in the dust. Not true! Face-to-face contact is, and always will be, the number one way to grow your business.

Visibility Builds Trust

As hard as it is to hear, the most able competitor doesn’t always win. It’s more often the most visible competitor who gets the client or the project. Ask 100 people what is the best burger in town, and many of them will say Burger King or McDonald’s. Those businesses come to mind quickly. Because there is one on every corner, they are perceived as the best. They have visibility. Visibility builds trust. And, nobody will buy from you unless they trust you.

Do you know flaky people who are succeeding in business? Of course you do. Why? Visibility is more important than real ability! When we see something repeatedly, we get the impression it must be good. Its recurring presence attests to its success. The perception of success builds trust.

The “trick”: who knows you is as important as who you know. Lack of visibility diminishes your credibility. Hide at the office, and you will be the competitor who loses. People trust people and companies they see frequently, especially if they are consistent.

Business networking groups like BNI (Business Networking International), trade groups, niche associations, and your local chamber of commerce will constantly urge you to just show up reliably. This is because they know that half the battle is being seen, becoming a familiar face and reintroducing your business over and over again. 10 Tips to Increase Your Visibility

1. Networking is not for making a sale on the spot. Go into every networking opportunity understanding that your job is to make new contacts, build your database and follow up with them.

2. Stop sitting with your friends. Sit with a table of strangers and converse with all of them.

3. Once you find a promising organization, volunteer to help at the check in table where you will meet everyone who arrives.

4. Look for first timers. Walk up to them, stick out your hand and say “Hi, I’m (your name). Are you new? What do you do? Be sure to exchange business cards.

5. Move into the “power circle.” Make a beeline for the organization’s decision makers, like the President or Administrator. Introduce yourself and make friends with them quickly.

6. Find out who determines the speakers. If you can get a chance to speak, your credibility will grow rapidly.

7. Don’t waste your money on display tables. Instead, network with the people around the display tables.

8. If there is a table with business cards and brochures, pick up one of everything, and look for people who could use your products or services.

9. Besides looking for customers, also look for people you might joint venture, team with, or who could be good referral sources.

10. Stop thinking about yourself and be helpful to other people. More than anything else, this builds trust in you.

Five Google Ranking Tips

December 8, 2011 in Marketing

Most Google ranking tips deal with getting incoming links (or backlinks as they are also referred to) to your website. And for good reason. The more quality incoming links (determined by the rank of the site that the link originates from and the relevance of the keyword) you have, the higher your Google Page Rank will be and the more visible you will be to your prospects and/or customers. Here are some tricks to build your incoming links.

Submit your site to search engine directories. some directories charge a fee but many of them are free. If you’re on a tight budget, stick to the free ones. These can get you some free links back to your website. Sign up with as many as you can. The more links you have into your site, the better your page rank.

This is one of the most overlooked but best of Google ranking tips. Join forums that are relevant to your industry. When you participate in forums and include the link to your website in your signature, you will get links back to your website. This is a very effective way to establish your reputation in your industry and raise your page rank at the same time.

Create an ezine (or newsletter). Taking the time to create a newsletter that you can send out to subscribers is definitely worth it. This keeps your visitors up to date with what you are doing and brings them back to visit your website on a consistent basis. You can also submit your ezine to an ezine directory which will link back to your website and give you more free incoming links.

Take advantage of article marketing. If you can create (or hire someone to do it for you) articles that pertain to your business, with your website information at the bottom, and submit them to article directories, you will get more traffic and links.

Ask for links from other related sites’ webmasters. This is a rather “old-school” tactic but is still effective, albeit frustrating and time-consuming. Find sites that are related to your industry and write to their webmasters requesting that they link back to you. Some will not answer you. Some will say “no”. Some will ask you to link to them as well. And others will just link to you.

You have higher chances of getting the results you want with this if your site contains valuable information. While your ultimate goal is to have high-rank sites linking to yours, you can start out with any rank (as long as the content is valuable and relevant to what you have to offer). As you bring in more links, your rank will go up as well and you will be able to attract the higher ranking sites.

Hopefully these five Google ranking tips will help you achieve the ranking and traffic you’re aiming for.

How to Become a Celebrity in Your Field

March 14, 2011 in Marketing

By  Vicki Garcia, President, Marketing-Impressions

In a world where competition is fierce, the climb to the top is arduous and challenging. Everyone in your field is reasonably smart, educated, experienced, even talented.  So what? To become recognized as a leader or celebrity in your field…no matter if your area of expertise is nuclear physics, business consulting, plastic surgery, sports, politics, or landscaping…you need a strategy that attracts followers.

This is happening all around you, and you can see the results.  Here are a few names: Martha Stewart, Britney Spears, Colonel Sanders, Colin Powel, Lance Armstrong, Paris Hilton, Opra Winfrey, Tiger Woods.  Need I go on?  Some of these people are extraordinarily talented; some show only a talent for getting noticed.  But, it’s a good bet that there are people in their fields who are just as talented, but are not as well known.  What makes the difference?

Keep in mind there are degrees of celebrity which vary based on an individual’s region or field. While someone might be a celebrity to some people who are interested in their area, to others they may be completely unknown.  You may be interested in becoming a celebrity retail store owner in a small city, while another person may want national fame in an industry.

What these people and others who want to be seen as leaders are doing is honing their own “personal brand.”  They are following the Four Universal Rules of Personal Branding.

Universal Rule #1 – Nothing is Sold Until it is Branded.   Here’s shorthand for understanding branding.  Branding is “pre-selling.”  We’ve moved from a selling world to a buying world.  Nobody wants to be sold anything, but they do want to buy.  Buyers want to investigate, educate themselves and buy the product or services they think they have discovered.  They want to follow the thought leadership of someone they believe they have found.  The good news is, if you don’t like selling, this is a perfect strategy for you because buyers show up at your door pre-sold.

Universal Rule #2- Visibility is More Important than Ability.  That’s a chilling thought, isn’t it?  But, think about it.  Do you know a competitor who is incompetent but still gets business?  Visibility.  Visibility builds trust, and all sales are built on trust.  As human beings, we have a few ways to judge people and products.  One way is if we see it everywhere, we start to believe it is trustworthy.  If everyone is investing with Bernie Madoff, we believe he is credible.  So, if you want to be a celebrity in your field, get visible.  You can’t hide behind your business or avoid the public and become a celebrity.

Universal Rule #3 – What You See is What You Think You Get.  Perception drives our world.  In the quest to become a celebrity in your field, you must manage perception or it will manage you.  So, start with the image you project.  Do you exude confidence?  Do you stand out in a crowd?  Are you gregarious or at least have a character that is interesting?   Avoid the sin of being too conservative and reserved which is perceived as mousey and insecure, which is death to celebrity.  Harry Beckwith in his book You, Inc. says “People think in stereotypes.  People think and buy with their eyes.  They hear what they see.  Watch your visual clues to trigger the right stereotypes.”

Universal Rule #3 – People Trust People They Like, and are Impressed With.  In the western psyche “like” and “trust” and inextricably linked.  We have a difficult time trusting someone we don’t like and we intrinsically trust someone we do like.  Buyers always prefer to do business with a person, not a company, because we know we can trust a person we know.  Logic loses out to emotion every time, and people find confidence very attractive.   People buy and will pay more for the way you make them feel, so make them feel good.   Everyone is looking for a guru, no matter the field.  We want advice we can depend on and follow.  Show people you are that person.

These are the principals behind the strategy of becoming a celebrity in your field.  How you apply these principals is the subject of another article.
