With the advent of the internet, websites, social media and other technologies, it can seem that the “old-fashioned” effectiveness of local business networking has been left in the dust. Not true! Face-to-face contact is, and always will be, the number one way to grow your business.

Visibility Builds Trust

As hard as it is to hear, the most able competitor doesn’t always win. It’s more often the most visible competitor who gets the client or the project. Ask 100 people what is the best burger in town, and many of them will say Burger King or McDonald’s. Those businesses come to mind quickly. Because there is one on every corner, they are perceived as the best. They have visibility. Visibility builds trust. And, nobody will buy from you unless they trust you.

Do you know flaky people who are succeeding in business? Of course you do. Why? Visibility is more important than real ability! When we see something repeatedly, we get the impression it must be good. Its recurring presence attests to its success. The perception of success builds trust.

The “trick”: who knows you is as important as who you know. Lack of visibility diminishes your credibility. Hide at the office, and you will be the competitor who loses. People trust people and companies they see frequently, especially if they are consistent.

Business networking groups like BNI (Business Networking International), trade groups, niche associations, and your local chamber of commerce will constantly urge you to just show up reliably. This is because they know that half the battle is being seen, becoming a familiar face and reintroducing your business over and over again. 10 Tips to Increase Your Visibility

1. Networking is not for making a sale on the spot. Go into every networking opportunity understanding that your job is to make new contacts, build your database and follow up with them.

2. Stop sitting with your friends. Sit with a table of strangers and converse with all of them.

3. Once you find a promising organization, volunteer to help at the check in table where you will meet everyone who arrives.

4. Look for first timers. Walk up to them, stick out your hand and say “Hi, I’m (your name). Are you new? What do you do? Be sure to exchange business cards.

5. Move into the “power circle.” Make a beeline for the organization’s decision makers, like the President or Administrator. Introduce yourself and make friends with them quickly.

6. Find out who determines the speakers. If you can get a chance to speak, your credibility will grow rapidly.

7. Don’t waste your money on display tables. Instead, network with the people around the display tables.

8. If there is a table with business cards and brochures, pick up one of everything, and look for people who could use your products or services.

9. Besides looking for customers, also look for people you might joint venture, team with, or who could be good referral sources.

10. Stop thinking about yourself and be helpful to other people. More than anything else, this builds trust in you.

Most Google ranking tips deal with getting incoming links (or backlinks as they are also referred to) to your website. And for good reason. The more quality incoming links (determined by the rank of the site that the link originates from and the relevance of the keyword) you have, the higher your Google Page Rank will be and the more visible you will be to your prospects and/or customers. Here are some tricks to build your incoming links.

Submit your site to search engine directories. some directories charge a fee but many of them are free. If you’re on a tight budget, stick to the free ones. These can get you some free links back to your website. Sign up with as many as you can. The more links you have into your site, the better your page rank.

This is one of the most overlooked but best of Google ranking tips. Join forums that are relevant to your industry. When you participate in forums and include the link to your website in your signature, you will get links back to your website. This is a very effective way to establish your reputation in your industry and raise your page rank at the same time.

Create an ezine (or newsletter). Taking the time to create a newsletter that you can send out to subscribers is definitely worth it. This keeps your visitors up to date with what you are doing and brings them back to visit your website on a consistent basis. You can also submit your ezine to an ezine directory which will link back to your website and give you more free incoming links.

Take advantage of article marketing. If you can create (or hire someone to do it for you) articles that pertain to your business, with your website information at the bottom, and submit them to article directories, you will get more traffic and links.

Ask for links from other related sites’ webmasters. This is a rather “old-school” tactic but is still effective, albeit frustrating and time-consuming. Find sites that are related to your industry and write to their webmasters requesting that they link back to you. Some will not answer you. Some will say “no”. Some will ask you to link to them as well. And others will just link to you.

You have higher chances of getting the results you want with this if your site contains valuable information. While your ultimate goal is to have high-rank sites linking to yours, you can start out with any rank (as long as the content is valuable and relevant to what you have to offer). As you bring in more links, your rank will go up as well and you will be able to attract the higher ranking sites.

The question is always asked, how much should be spent on marketing and advertising. Some businesses start on a shoestring and grow rapidly. Others take hundreds even thousands of dollars and go at a snails pace. While I have never heard a hard and fast answer to how much you should spend, you need a strategy that will produce results for you.

The key here is not how much you spend, but that you consistently reinvest money in your business. Determine how much you can afford, is it $100 or 10% of your gross, or maybe for a new product or service launch you need more.

  Here are some rules:

1. Don’t get into bad spending habits, they can kill you. Learn to distinguish between your needs and wants.

2. Know where you are going before you jump in too quickly. Make decisions for new products, services, markets or advertising based on good information. Do your research.

3. Use creative financing solutions. Barter your services in exchange for what you need. Do co-op adverting/promotional programs with businesses that reach your same market. Learn what business loan options are available.

4. Become known in your marketplace as an expert, your customers will send their friends and associates to you. Take advantage of marketing tactics that require more time and energy, then your money can extend your market reach. Write articles for your local newspaper, send a newsletter to your customers with tips or trends they need to know about.

5. To produce the results you want, there must be a return on any investment of time or money to makes sense for your business.

Remember it is the continued investment and perseverance that pay off. Small investments over time produce consistent results.
